01 — The Box

Coached. Scaled.
Never boring.

Every class is capped at 14 athletes with two coaches on the floor. Warm-up, skill work, the WOD, and a cool-down you will actually be walked through. Every movement has a scale, so day one and year five train side by side.

Nine hundred square metres of rig, platforms, ski ergs and turf in a converted paper works. Showers, secure lockers, and a coffee machine that gets more use than the abmats.

“I came in for six weeks to get fit for a wedding. Two years later I’m coaching the 06:30.”

04 — Questions

Straight answers

Do I need to be fit before I start?

No. You don't need to get fit to come here — that's what we're for. Every movement scales, and the foundations sessions exist precisely so week one never guesses.

I've never touched a barbell. Problem?

The opposite. You'll learn from scratch with a coach on the floor — full demos before every workout, loads adjusted mid-session, technique before intensity, always.

How big are classes?

Capped at 14 athletes with two coaches. Big enough for energy, small enough that both coaches know what your knee did last Tuesday.

What does it cost?

Plans run by frequency — hit Pricing in the menu and we'll send you the current options. Students, blue light and household rates available.

Our story

Built in Bristol

CrossFit Hoka Hey opened in 2018 in a converted paper works off Bishop Road — one rig, a stubborn landlord, and a belief that Bristol deserved a box where coaching came first. Six years and 640 members later, the rig is longer and the belief hasn't moved.

We're a coached gym. Every session has two coaches on the floor, a plan that builds week to week, and a whiteboard that doesn't care what anyone else lifted. Strength is the backbone; conditioning serves it, not the other way around.

And it's a neighbourhood gym on purpose — same faces at the 06:30, same coffee machine queue, same hello on the high street whether you stayed or not.

Walked in terrified, walked out with a membership and a nickname. The 14-person cap is real — both coaches knew my name and my dodgy shoulder by day two.

Third box I've trained at since moving to Bristol and easily the best coached. Oly mornings with Marcus fixed a snatch fault two other gyms just shrugged at.

Did the free week expecting to hate it. The Tuesday Engine session is genuinely evil and I have never felt fitter. Tomás is a menace and a gem.

Never lifted before. Ellie's foundations group made week one feel like week ten — every movement scaled, zero ego in the room, coffee after.

The showers are hot, the lockers work, the programming builds. It's the small stuff done properly, week after week. Best money I spend every month.

Joined as a household, stayed for the community. Partner WODs on Saturday then the entire class queues for the coffee machine. That's the review.

Every coach on the floor holds a CF-L2 or higher and coaches full time. You will never be handed a whiteboard and left to it.

Marcus Ade

Marcus Ade

Head Coach / Owner

Opened the box in 2018 after a decade in strength and conditioning. Runs the barbell club and the 05:30, and has never once been late to either. If the programming made you stronger this quarter, that was Marcus.

Came in for a six-week wedding block and never left. Owns the ring work and the rope-climb clinic, and is single-handedly responsible for half the box's first muscle-ups.

Ex-rowing squad. Writes the Tuesday engine sessions that everybody complains about and everybody attends. Believes pacing is a skill and will teach it to you whether you asked or not.

CrossFit

Ideal forEveryone — day one to year five
FocusStrength and conditioning, coached in groups of 14

One coached hour: warm-up, skill work, the WOD, and a cool-down you'll actually be walked through. No two days the same, no session unplanned.

Structured, not random. Programming runs in cycles so PRs happen on purpose, not by accident.

Scaled every day. Every movement has a version that fits you today. 43kg or a PVC pipe — same workout.

Two coaches, every class. Form fixed mid-set, loads adjusted mid-workout, names known by day two.

Olympic Lifting

Ideal forTechnique-hungry lifters, any level
FocusSnatch and clean & jerk, built properly

Tuesday and Thursday mornings on the platforms: positional work, percentages, and bar speed — coached by lifters who compete. Slow is smooth, smooth is a white light.

Technique before load. Video review every block; the bar goes up when the positions earn it.

Real programming. Wave-loaded cycles with testing weeks — not random maxing on cold mornings.

Comp pathway. Club singlet, local meets, and a bench of teammates yelling numbers at you.

Engine

Ideal forCapacity chasers and pacing nerds
FocusIntervals, aerobic base, and an honest scoreboard

The Tuesday sessions everybody complains about and everybody attends. Ergs, sleds and lungs — built on interval science, delivered with a countdown clock.

Pacing that sticks. Learn to negative-split instead of blowing up at minute four.

Tested, tracked, retested. Benchmarks every eight weeks so the engine you're building shows its numbers.

Plays well with lifting. Programmed to support your strength work, not eat it.
